Antonis (Arranged by Manolis Androulidakis)

The indomitable prisoner of Mauthausen, Antonis, with his physical prowess and determination, astounded the SS officer. His story is described by Iakovos Kampanellis in his iconic work “Mauthausen,” which was set to music by Mikis Theodorakis and sung by Maria Farantouri. The orchestral version of the song “Antonis” was used as the soundtrack in Costas Gavras’ film “Z” (1968), which deals with the assassination of Grigoris Labrakis by paramilitary forces.
The performer, I believe, should take into consideration this background and convey the passionate “resistance” character of the work as they see fit.

To reproduce the snare drum sound, I use the well-known technique of fretting the 6th with the 5th string, something I have done in my other works as well. It’s important to clearly differentiate the forte melodic line from the piano accompaniment. Additionally, the golpes of the left hand, which produce the percussive sound, must be precise and rhythmically consistent, just as the character of the work as a whole is perfectly rhythmic and challenging.

Ο αλύγιστος κρατούμενος του Μαουντχάουζεν, Αντώνης με τη σωματική του ρώμη και την ευστροφία του έκανε τον αξιωματικό των SS να σαστίσει. Η ιστορία του περιγράφεται από τον Ιάκωβο Καμπανέλλη στο εμβληματικό του έργο “Μαουντχάουζεν”, που μελοποίησε ο Μίκης Θεοδωράκης και τραγούδησε η Μαρία Φαραντούρη. Η ορχηστρική βερσιόν του τραγουδιού «ο Αντώνης», χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως soundtrack στην ταινία του Κώστα Γαβρά «Ζ» (1968), με θέμα τη δολοφονία του Γρηγόρη Λαμπράκη από παρακρατικούς.
Ο ερμηνευτής, πρέπει, θεωρώ, να λάβει υπόψιν αυτό το background και να αποδώσει, κατά το δοκούν τον ορμητικό «αντιστασιακό» χαρακτήρα του έργου.

Για να αποδώσω το snare drum, χρησιμοποιώ τη γνωστή τεχνική του δεσίματος της 6ης με την 5η χορδή, κάτι που έχω κάνει και σε άλλα έργα μου.
Είναι σημαντική η ξεκάθαρη διαφοροποίηση της forte μελωδικής γραμμής, με την piano συνοδεία. Επίσης, τα golpe του αριστερού χεριού, που αποδίδουν τον κρουστό ήχο, πρέπει να είναι καίρια και με ρυθμική συνέπεια, όπως απόλυτα ρυθμικός και εμβατηριακός είναι ο χαρακτήρας, συνολικά, του έργου.
