Neighborhood of Angel’s (Suite) (Arranged by Manolis Androulidakis)

The Suite from “Neighborhood of Angels” consists of four musical themes (“Bread on the Table,” “Penia,” “Kites,” “Hasaposerviko”) composed by Mikis Theodorakis for the homonymous play by Iakovos Kambanellis. In my guitar version, I attempted to maintain the composer’s aesthetic direction with characteristic Greek rhythms and interesting sound colors:

• The bouzouki with the tremolo and the aggressive apoyando technique in the final part.
• The tzouras in the melody at the beginning of the 1st part with a “metallic” sul ponticello sound using the nails.
• The cello with col legno tratto, demanding thumb tremolo and tremolandi in the bass strings in the 2nd part.

The detuning of the 6th string from E to D, between the 3rd and 4th part, is something I have used in both my work “Emmoni 5” and my concerto “Five Miniatures for Guitar and Strings”. It requires speed and concentration, which are also essential in this demanding piece. However, with its melodies and variety, it rewards the soloist who studies and performs it.

Η Σουίτα από τη «Γειτονιά των Αγγέλων» αποτελείται από τέσσερα μουσικά θέματα («Το ψωμί είναι στο τραπέζι», «Πενιά», «Χαρταετοί», «Χασαποσέρβικο») που συνέθεσε ο Μίκης Θεοδωράκης για το ομώνυμο θεατρικό έργο του Ιάκωβου Καμπανέλλη. Στην κιθαριστική μου εκδοχή, προσπάθησα να κρατήσω την αισθητική κατεύθυνση του συνθέτη με τους χαρακτηριστικούς Ελληνικούς ρυθμούς και τα ενδιαφέροντα ηχοχρώματα:

• το μπουζούκι με το tremoloκαι το επιθετικό apoyandoτου τελευταίου μέρους,
• το τσέμπαλο στη μελωδία της αρχής του 1^ου μέρους με «μεταλλικό» sul pont.  με νύχι,
• το τσέλο collegnotratto, με το απαιτητικό τρέμολο του αντίχειρα και τα tremolandiμπάσα έγχορδα στο 2^ομέρος.

Το ξεκούρδισμα της 6^ης από Mi σε Re, μεταξύ 3^ου και 4^ου μέρους, είναι κάτι που το έχω χρησιμοποιήσει τόσο στο έργο μου ”Emmoni 5” όσο και στο κοντσέρτο μου ”Five miniatures for guitar and strings”. Απαιτεί ταχύτητα και συγκέντρωση, κάτι άλλωστε που είναι ζητούμενο και σε όλο αυτό το απαιτητικό έργο, που όμως, με τις μελωδίες του και την ποικιλία του, αποζημιώνει τον σολίστα που θα το μελετήσει και θα το ερμηνεύσει.
